Blackmore Vale Short Mat Bowling League
The BMV League started as a friendly league in the late 1980’s, formed by six Clubs based around a 12 mile radius of Sturminster Newton.
In 2001 a League Committee was formed to run the ever growing league and put it on a more structured basis. The BMV now has a membership of 20 Clubs
supporting 37 league teams spread over five divisions and three Counties, Dorset, Somerset and just into Wiltshire.
The season starts on the 1st September and runs through to the end of the following March, culminating in an end of season Cup Competition. All teams from all divisions are allowed to enter, prizes for Division winners are also presented at this gathering.
League games are played over 20 ends by two lots of triples. Possession of the mat is decided by the toss of a coin. The first ten ends are then played following the English short mat bowling rules with no time limit. After ten ends there is usually a break for refreshments, after which the home team changes mats and the last ten ends are played. The score cards stay on the same mats.
Points are allocated as follows –
2 points for winning fist mat – one point each if there is a draw
2 points for winning the second mat – one point each if there is a draw
2 points for highest combined shots from both mats – one point each if there is a draw
The BMV run two Charity Competitions each year. One between the BVM and the Yeovil League which is in aid of the Air Ambulance. The other in aid of the MacMillan Nurses which is between four other leagues. This is termed the Blackmore Vale Presidents Cup and is usually a very hard fought affair.
